Clash of the Titans
The Prince of Darkness Vs. The Fair Queen

~----~----~----~----~~----~----~----~----~
On a throne of obsidian and bone, my rule is absolute.
The flame and brimstone of hell are mine to command.
I am all that is dead, all that is dying,
all that is defunct in this age.
The spirits of the damned are at my beck and call.
I take them, using them as my tome
upon which my words will recorded for all those who dare to read.
My words are written in human blood,
boiled in the sins of a generation of heretics.
My inkpot, a human skull filled with the screams of the lamented dead.
My pen is the feather from the phoenix,
ripped away from the undying bird through sorceries
unknown to man, yet common knowledge to the corridors of my mind.
My writings are of the blackness I wallow in,
and I have no time or place for goodness or light in my works.
Darkness is power and power is all that matters to one of the dark...

Living in beauty the light seems to know
that even in darkness, goodness will glow.
The image of decency, devoid of the obscene
is the foundation of greatness vividly seen...
I make my own heavens and write my full stories...
I rejoice in the world and all of it's glories.
My pen is a fairy wand, my paper, the night..
Yes, the best cure for darkness is smoldering light
My words make all ache to absorb as they read-
regardless of nationalities, colors, or creed..
I am all that is alive, all that is living-
All that breathes in this land of the forgiving
There is no power in darkness- we all look to the bright.
Stars are admired, and ignored is the night...

~----~----~----~----~

The verse is for darkness and darkness alone.
My pens will soon drip with a new life's blood, Faerie Queen...

You always need light- ESPECIALLY in dark
To identify darkness, you must know a spark.

Your light is a pollution, obstructing my shade.
Stars will fall, the moon will die by hand.

The stars will forever linger, as will the moon!
But dusk will soon fade into a luminous tune.

Your visions of sunsets and lovers all but sickens me.
As I rip your sun from the sky, the laments of the
damned will sound your death knell.

Such passion for death from the blood a live one-
or rather, confusion from one who's life is not done...

You marvel at my darkened spirit, and well you should.
Shadows are the only home for those with words trapped inside.

Victims of language hide away in the netherworld,
while those who LOVE words in the light are unfurled.

Those accursed in my realm are my pawns and no more...
a role that the simpletons you care for will know well.

And is the fool the one who dances with the birds?
No, it is the one who denies the joy of words.

Birds, fools on hills, all this will burn and char at
a single syllable from what has been written.
All that is left of your world will be ash

Then I shall decorate the world with the glories of her past,
I will find the beauty in the remaining ash.

Your worlds of love and beauty, I no longer see.
In time, your perception will change and you too will cease.

Your world of darkness seems unclear and bitter-
but I have faith that in time you'll see glitter.

You'll see nothing shortly!
Fires of death, I summon thee!

You will soon bow to heaven above!
Prepare as I let fly the sparks of love!

As shadow rises to challenge the morn,
in the midst of all glory, chaos is born.

I guess you've shown us!

Don't know what else to say. Magnificent work from the 'titans'. (Is this going to be a new q-land status - somewhere beyond member, and before god/lord high executioner?)

I am impressed, truly impressed. Using the free verse for the Prince and tightly structured (non-chaotic) verse for the Queen, worked great. I have no concept how a collaboration can work. I think that for it to work well, each side must take opposition as you have done. What a great way to present an ancient battle. The basic images are ancient but elaborations on the images (especially by the Prince) kept it fresh. I would have never thought it would work, but it works well.

First off, thank you all very much for your replies. Your praise is sincerely appreciated by both of us, in what we thought to be something different for the forum.

Fair---you were a wonderful partner, and doing this was great fun. Perhaps we should have a rematch sometime?!? Btw, EXCELLENT idea to put the visual up top with the title...it fits so well. Thanks for a great time.

Sincere---as one who has, obviously, challenged "The Faerie Queen" on the field of battle....she is a force to be reckoned with! Thank you for your praise.

Rhon---Thank you for your praise...we just did what we could. I don't know about giving a new title, though I wouldn't mind it if instead of "member", my name had "Prince of Darkness" beneath it...

Jess---thanks. Hope you enjoyed!

Gem---Thanks for your praise and comments...i don't know about an award or a speech...maybe Fair has more to say than me on that...Thanks again.

Surgeon---thank you for your distinct praise. Actually, our styles of free verse and rhymed couplets worked pretty well for this. It made a nice stylistic difference that added to the "confrontation".

Glad you all enjoyed. Thanks again!

fondest regards,
---pn.

A stunning work of collaboration. The rest of us should just hang up our keyboards and retire to the "Home for Humbled Writers".

"Titans" is as good a name as any to describe all the wonderful people here at Quoteland who participate beyond the ranks of "member". For me, my "no entiendo" works. lol smile

Thanks for all the praise, but I have to say this was more of the Prince's (;)) doing- I've been so out of it lately that it TRULY shows how on top of this stuff he is. smile

I feel like I'm giving an acceptance speech so I'm gonna cut it off here- thanks again. razz

Fair...I know good will win.
Platinum...It's fun to be beaten, isn't it? wink

Doug--Thank you, but I hardly know that you guys should give up! We aren't that good! (Although it'd be nice to think we were!) Thanks again for your praise.

Fair---to my wonderful partner/adversary, you had a bigger hand in this than you know. I just did what I could to bring out two contrasted poetic minds. Thank you for this "fantastical" opportunity! wink

SS---Thank you for your praise, but I have a question here...
WHO SAID THAT ANYONE WON OR LOST??? We sure didn't...I don't know what you are implying as to myself or "evil" (we dark princes get such a bad rap...) losing. I didn't lose.....it's just that no one knows the conclusion. Not even Fair or I.
So, don't go saying "good" won without knowing the truth!
LOL...just kidding, but there isn't really a resolution...the conflict goes on. make your own decision.

EC---thank you highly for your amazing praise. If we're getting compliments from Quoteland's most powerful denizens...we must be doing something right! Thanks again!
fondest regards,

I must say that I'm impressed.
I especially enjoyed the mixture of meters (or lack thereof) to emphasize the difference in personalities. I love the use of vocabulary in order to build the sense of foreboding and dread in the Dark Lord: that style, contrasted with the lightheartedness and simplicty of the Fair Queen's couplets, makes for an overall exquisite effect; the inept verbosity of evil versus the simple but effective words of good.
Tarnation! It's the best thing since swirled ice cream at McDonald's! wink
In any case, bravo the both of you! The best compliment I can give, I think, is that you reminded me of that wonderful bit of poetry at the beginning of The Lord of the Rings.

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
