Budget: a methodical way of going broke.

--Grouch Marx (?)

Pond: A body of water smaller than a lake.

Lake: A body of water larger than a pond.

--??

In actuality a lake is deteremined by depth and not by surface areas of water. A lake will have deep dark areas where sunlight cannot fully penetrate. A shallow body of twenty acres could be defined as a pond where a small area of water that is very deep could be defined as a lake. Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee is gradually filling in and getting shallower. At some point in the future it will revert back to a marsh and then become a forest again. It is the way of nature.
