Unknowing Twins Marry

LONDON, England (CNN) -- British twins who had been separated at birth learned they were related only after they had become husband and wife, according to a senior British lawmaker.

Former British MP David Alton says twins separated at birth went on to marry each other.

Lord Alton of Liverpool told the House of Lords that a court annulled the union as soon as the twins' true relationship became known.

"They were never told that they were twins," he said during the December 10 debate on a law covering human fertility and embryology.

They had been adopted by separate families and "met later in life and felt an inevitable attraction, and the judge had to deal with the consequences of the marriage that they entered into and all the issues of their separation," he said.

No further details about the case were revealed by Lord Alton, and it is not known when the marriage took place or how long they were together before they discovered the truth.

Adoption groups said Friday the case proved the need for openness and transparency during the adoption process.

Mo O'Reilly, director of child placement for the British Association for Adoption and Fostering, said released a statement saying: "Thirty or 40 years ago it would have been more likely that twins be separated and brought up without knowledge of each other."

However, she said, greater emphasis in recent years on ensuring adopted siblings stay in touch meant this "traumatic" case will remain "incredibly rare."

Daisy O'Clee, a spokeswoman for the agency, said that of more current concern is the lack of legislation surrounding fertility treatment.

Under British law the parents of a donor-conceived child do not have to declare that fact on the child's birth certificate, O'Clee told CNN. This means a child conceived with a donor sperm or egg may never know their true origin.

Lawmakers will vote Tuesday on whether to pass a law covering human fertility and embryology that would relax the rules on who can have fertility treatment.

O'Clee warned that in its present form the proposal does little to address the rights of donor-conceived children.

"The rights of donor children are being ignored," she said.

Woman was created from the rib of man.
She was not made from a part of his head to top him,
nor was she made from his feet to be trampled on.
She was created out of his side to equal him,
under his arm to be protected by him
and near his heart to be loved.

The framing of that article is really poor. There is a lot of freedom for scientists to research IQ, race and gender. Scientists DO research these topics, and they find all sorts of correlations. The problem arises not from science, but from a science-illiterate media who overinterpret the results of studies and confuse correlation with causation. Sharon Begley occasionally demonstrates a deep ignorance about science, despite being a science journalist. She's not terrible, but this was obviously a bad week for her.

Some actual scientists on Begley's work:

  • PZ Myers (a biologist)
  • Orac (a surgeon)

That sanctimonius Begley article assumes 'political correctness' of the scientific sector where it just doesn't exist. Few, if any, scientists DO avoid controversial research. Most of them love it.

    “Japan’s scariest toilet paper” debuts
Posted by: brb In: Japan ()

If you’re a horror fan or just the type of person whose toilet literature consists nothing but travel books about Japan and some manga, you might appreciate the entertainment value of what has been dubbed “Japan’s scariest toilet paper”, probably the world’s first horror novella in the form of disposable bathroom wipes.

    Koji Suzuki’s bone-chilling, toilet-readable horror novel:
    "Drop"

The unusual toilet paper is a collaboration between Koji Suzuki, author of such horror novels-turned-movies as Ring, Spiral and Dark Water, and Hayashi Paper, based in Fuji, Shizuoka, who commissioned Suzuki to write a bathroom-themed horror story.

The toilet paper roll is printed with Suzuki’s new work called Drop, a nine-chapter horror novella set in a public restroom that the company promises will give readers a “psychological fright” while moving their bowels.

Fast readers might well find themselves using a whole roll in one sitting.

Rolls of horror-filled toilet paper printed in blue

In Japan the toilet has never been a traditionally cozy place to spend one’s time in and one might reasonably expect that reading this horror-themed toilet paper will make it less inviting still.

Only for horror fans who read Japanese.

The horror-themed toilet paper will be sold starting June 6 on the internet and department stores and will cost 210 yen (about $2) each.

What was that? Big Grin Big Grin Roll Eyes

    Understanding the Black Experience?

What a really uplifting article. It restores the atmosphere of unity and togetherness that Obama antithesises. I don't think it's any accident that Obama has routinely lent his ear to subversive agitators like William Ayers and Rev. Jeremiah Wright in the past. He's susceptible to unsound fervour.

I just wanted to say thanks the people who post these links. I'm required to keep a journal for English Lit, and the teacher encourages us to include interesting articles that we've annotated and discussed in relation to the course. I've found loads of great articles in this thread, and managed to find ways to connect many of them to what we're studying. Thankyou for making my homework easier Smile

Trish, you must be able to do better than WND. Unless you posted that as a joke, which I'd have to give you full credit for.

  • Pat Boone's Limitless Stupidity

Boone does make me laugh, but only in a nervous way. He's actually too insane to bother engaging with. There are not many people in this world I believe that of. Poor guy.

Thanks guys!!! Doon I loved that toilet paper article. it will go on my blog soon. Smile

    Emerald Eyes...

For me to be biased to Fuzzies, I would have to first know what WND is. I don't. To add to that I don't even know who Pat Boone is. You may not believe me, - and that's something I am not responsible for - but I come from a country, where English is at best the third language for every individual who is not a christian. I don't profess to understand any slangs/special innuendoes that most people who are foreign to my native land use.

When Fuzzies, Twister and me started GOA, we had so many arguements because Twister and Fuzzies would say something and I would perpetually be in a state of misunderstanding.

Swear words and harsh phrases must be a part of your vocabulary, but its not a part of mine, nor I would like to think of many others, but I can't vouch for other cultures, as I know not much of them other than what I have read in books and seen on the television/in films. Something that is an everyday joke for you is sometimes very distasteful to us, and I am sure it could be vice versa. All I am asking is that you educate me, and maybe in the future you will not feel so lonely.

Fuzzies is under watch too... and the new rule that we are trying out will mean an edit on what anybody writes. I did not find anything wrong in his post. Is there anything wrong? If there is, please elaborate on that, rather than on Ad Hominem. And please do so in a PT, with your grievances put forward to all moderators, that way if you have any suspicions about me being biased towards fuzzies or any other member, then the bias can be addressed in the presence of the other's and justice can prevail. For the record, TN's word is always final on all things that happen on QL, whatever everyone might think.

Have you heard the charge... ad hominem?? It's in reference to people that reply to an argument by attacking the person rather than the argument made.

It's not ad hom if it's a reasonable conclusion, drawing from evidence. If you read the link. If you know much about history and law and read Boone, then it becomes clear it's not ad hom at all. The man is either very, very stupid, or a very strange sort of liar. I strongly suspect you on only read the title of the link, because that's the only way you might have interpreted the article I linked to as mere ad hom.

I am not at the beck and call of Quoteland 24/7. I have a life. You waited a whole day??? Its not even been a whole day since fuzzies wrote his post. For the record what you think of me, is not something that interests me in the least. You are welcome to malign Ananya as much as you want. Smile She won't say a word. She doesn't have to.
