I was surprised to see this post being resurrected but, hey, at least it gives me a chance to reflect on the way this site has grown and matured....and to offer a few well deserved thank you's....Settle in kids, this could be a long one..
In the beginning (No,not
that beginning) way back in the mists of time around March 1999 having never owned one before, I was the proud possesser of a shiny new computer. Heretofore I had gotten all of my information and most of my education and entertainment through such arcane and outdated methods as reading, y'know books, newspapers,magazines and the like??..I'm sure you've heard of them.
I was unsure and a little trepidacious about what this wonderful new toy had to offer, and almost from the outset I was overwhelmed with the plethora of pap which seems to be the bane of the Internet's existance..but then, far off in the distance, intermittently visible and almost submerged by the restless maelstrom of mindless rubbish which swirled around me every time I logged on was a small steady beacon which went by the title of "Quoteland.com" .
Heading straight for it, like a sailor finally weary of the storm tossed sea, I found a safe harbour where I could actually think like a grown-up who had an IQ greater than his shoe size and where the expression of those thoughts was, for the most part, appreciated rather than scorned.
In the fullness of time, after registering and a period of enthusiatic participation, I was invited by David to become a moderator;..the second person to be so honoured Zendam, quite rightly,having been the first, and I took it up with vigour.
Since then I have become aquainted with a vast array of differing characters and people through my association with this site.The vast majority of them, by far, are intelligent, erudite, witty and capable; with them I have never had any problem, even those who disagree with whatever views I espouse, as I have never been reluctant to discuss and argue my case with a resourceful opponent who is able to present their beliefs in a coherant and forthright manner,Hell!, I have even been persuaded to
change some long held beliefs as a result of some of these arguments,and that is entirely as it should be.
One thing I have NEVER been able to stomach, though are the inveterate, naval-gazing, me-me-me whiners, who are so affronted when they are asked to behave in a manner which is acceptable to the vast majority of the group to which they seek admittance instead of being allowed to blithly trip along in their own little world.
The thing which attracted me to this site in the first place is the intelligentsia who populate it. Now that I have aquired the position of Moderator, I would see it as a betrayal of trust if I were ever to let my guard down and allow all the half-witted, slackjawed, bubblegum brained, knuckledragging idiots who have no conception of what it is like to have three neurons fire sequentially to invade and make free with their inane, oft-repeated requests for the same pap ad-nauseam.
If you want Love Advice...'Ask Abbey™' but don't do it here; If you want to piss-off your friends or get back at your boyfriend/girlfriend/parents/pet iguana or whomever, start a slam book and pass it round, but don't do it here. If you want to find something, use the search engine first, we've been around long enough that just about every conceivable subject has been requested already. If you do not get what you want from the search engine, by all means post a request , but do it in ENGLISH, not garblish...that means NO text message language, No mixed cases and NO all caps posting (allowances will be made for those to whom english is not a first language or who have genuine learning difficulties, but not for those who are too stupid or lazy to be bothered to do it properly)
These rules are simple to follow and not burdensome ...if they are too much for you then you do not belong here and you are cordially invited to leave, ..just walk down the hall, take a left and through the door, don't forget to flip the light switch off before you go,thank you.
In fairness, I find that the tide throws up less and less of the intellectual driftwood than it used to, and I think that is in no small measure due to the efforts of all those who seem, like me, willing to help keep the beaches pristeen by collecting and burning those hapless braindead creatures who flop up from time to time. The message may be finally getting through (albeit slowly, remember we're not dealing with the brightest bulbs in the chandelier here) that this is not the place to come for keychain/boyfiend trouble/cheerleading quotes.
It is entirely true that I have forsaken the precision of the surgical blade of wit in favour of the 2 X 4 of mental brute force, but that is simply because it is the only weapon that the morons understand, anything less than repeated blows to the head seem to make no impression.
Honourable mention must at this point go to some of those who take up the cudgel on my behalf on so many occasions.
Ridin1..were I able to reach that far I would shake your hand, your ascerbic wit far surpasses mine, I wish I had that talent...
Galatea... as always, a fund of understanding, support and wisdom,
some of you people would really benefit from paying attention to what she has to say....on others of course, it is so far above them it is totally wasted, but we yet live in hope.
FairGwen...witty, charming and precise, a shining example that not all the young suffer from the same indolence of mind as is frequently displayed by those whos mental meanderings lead them here...
Zendam...calm and rational, a voice of quiet reason when all I want to do is slash and burn...
thenostromo...contributor extrordinaire, a stauncher bulwark of knowlege has yet to be found anywhere...
Rhon...who cannot be matched for fairness and who is not afraid to point out when we err,and call us on it,a brave and special person...
Triscodeca...a fund of technical knowledge who has pulled many of our asses from the computing fires on many occasions...
and of course...David and Adam, who started all of this and allow the me continual freedom and latitude to try and keep this page on something approaching the straight and narrow.....and to the many many others, moderators ,members and friends whom I would not have the space or time to list I offer a humble and heartfelt...Thank You..... such an array and combination of dazzling talent is rare to find and I count myself as hugely blessed to have even a small place among them.....some of the rest of you need to develop an attitude of gratitude that you are allowed to breath the same air as these people, much less whine about how unfair it is that you can't just post whatever the hell you want when you like or that your idiotic posts get moved or deleted or that you have all these 'stupid' rules to follow......
