Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising which tempt you to believe that your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to the end, requires some of the same courage which a soldier needs. Peace has its victories, but it takes brave men to win them. -Emerson

Life Shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage.
-- Anais Nin

Courage is not the lack of fear. It is acting in spite of it.
-- Mark Twain

Courage is not the towering oak That sees storms come and go, It is the fragile blossom That opens in the snow
-- Alice MacKenzie Swaim

The courage of life is often a less dramatic spectacle than the courage of the final moment; but it is no less a magnificent mixture of triumph and tragedy A man does what he must-in spite of personal consequences; in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures-and that is the basis of all morality.
-- John Fitzgerald Kennedy

Courage is to feel the daily daggers of relentless steel and keep on living
-- Douglas Malloch

"More powerful than the will to win is the courage to begin."
-- Anon

There is only one courage and that is the courage to let go of the past, not collect it, not to accumulate it, not to cling to it. We all cling to the past, and because we cling to the past we become available to the present.
-- Osho

Courage is the price that life exacts for granting peace.
The soul that knows it not, knows no release
From little things;
Knows not the livid loneliness of fear,
Nor mountain heights where bitter joy can hear
The Sound of wings.
-Amelia Earhart

cold courage...

Because courage consists in transcending normal fears, the highest kind of courage is cold courage; that is to say, courage in which the danger has been fully realized and there is no emotional excitement to conceal the danger.
-- Walter Lippmann

When thinking about courage . . . I am always reminded of the Cowardly Lion from "the Wizard of Oz" :

Cowardly Lion Courage! What makes a king out of a slave? Courage! What makes the flag on the mast to wave? Courage! What makes the elephant charge his tusk in the misty mist, or the dusky dusk? What makes the muskrat guard his musk? Courage! What makes the sphinx the seventh wonder? Courage! What makes the dawn come up like thunder? Courage! What makes the Hottentot so hot? What puts the "ape" in apricot? What have they got that I ain't got?
All: Courage!
Cowardly Lion You can say that again! Huh?

Two Courages...

In what you may call Motherhood and Fatherhood, the fundamental difference there of type; the woman the nourishing, the protecting, the helping, that is the special quality of the Mother - tender, gentle, patient and enduring - so that even if you take the masculine quality, the quality of courage, woman’s courage is very different from the courage of man. The courage of a man is the great impulse of his nature to assert himself as against opposition. The courage of woman springs from love, devotion, and she will be as brave, braver sometimes, than the bravest man; but it will be in defence of some one or some thing which she loves, and not with the mere desire of self-assertion, rivalry against an opponent.
-- Annie Besant, from Inner Government of the World, Chap III

'Tis said that courage is common, but the immense esteem in which it is held proves it to be rare. Animal resistance, the instinct of the male animal when cornered, is no doubt common; but the pure article, courage with eyes, courage with conduct, self-possession at the cannon's mouth, cheerfulness in lonely adherence to the right, is the endowment of elevated characters.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson

I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.

Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point.

Courage?
For me, it is doing something you are afraid of.

As what Eddie Rickenbacker said,

"Courage is doing what you're afraid to do. There can be no courage unless you're scared."
