Quoteland
"Excellence is not a singular act, but a habit. You are what you repeatedly do." Shaquille ONeal

Did you know Aristotle really said the quote first?

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." Aristotle

I know this because I found an excellent site you'll add to your bookmarks. The site is Quoteland and it is the best source on the internet for quotes.

Let me back up a little and correct that ... Quoteland is much more than just a quote site. The site itself features quotes, but much more. First off, the site is truly interactive. Because it is based on a database backend you can click on almost all information about a quote. Want to see what else Aristotle said? Click on his name. Want to find all the quotes concerning EXCELLENCE? Click on the subject. This makes finding the quotes much easier.

The second great feature is the forum for the site. Here visitors can discuss quotes among each other, ask for help in finding a quote or hunting down the author of a quote. It is an active message board with some great people on it!

The quotes themselves are organized in four areas: topic, literary, by author and by occasion. I found the occasion section to be an amazing time saver as I am always looking for a quote for work or a birthday!

Advertising on the site is minimal and well themed. For instance, each quote has a link that allows you to have the quote embossed on everything from a coffee mug to a bookmark. This is advertising done right.

Quoteland should be the only site you need when you're looking for the perfect words for that special occasion.

Several years ago when I was introduced to the internet, I found a phenomenal site -- Refdesk.com. If it is to be researched or found, Refdesk has a link to it. That is how I eventually found Quoteland. I am a member of another site and a good natured competition evolved in sourcing some rather obscure quotations. Finally I had the idea of going on Refdesk to find a good quote site. There is a generic link to multiple site BUT there is a direct link to Quoteland, the only site graced with that honor.

I clicked on it and the rest is history. I have been a devotee since that fateful day. Rarely have I posted a request that wasn't fulfilled and the few times that an answer could not be found, someone, usually Thenostromo, Zendam, or Triscodeca have responded that they had tried and were unable to identify the source. I have only good things to say about the site, the moderators, and the results. The plaudits are well deserved.

No good deed goes unpunished.

All praise is fully earned.

Like many others, I first found Quoteland when I needed the correct wording and attribution for something I wanted to quote. (Probably Burns' "Grain of sand...")

The rest is history. A wonderful place for information - and for a whole lot of fun. The only thing missing from the review was a discussion of Writer's Club & Debate! smile

Its been a great year since having discovered quoteland. Although I've put my foot in my mouth several times... I don't think I'll ever leave this place, unless of course two things happen.

1. unless i get banned smile

2. unless my puter dies out. frown

its got me hooked that much big grin

Thanks for checking in on this one, David. I was rather hoping that you would. It is good to know that you are still watching over us. I also wonder about Adam, and hope things are going well for him.

Here's another one:

If Bartlett's is the grandaddy of quotation books, [Quoteland] is the great grandaddy of quotation websites. Browse by topic or author, get random quotations and then have some fun identifying quotations. You know what was said, how do you find out who said it? This site can help. One of the best features is the active discussion board. Share quotes, debate quotes, get a little quote crazy. You'll be in good company!

There are several search tools to help you find quotes. Some of the best are Quoteland and The Quotations Archive.

This one is a bit dated, but I got a kick out of it:
Ever looking for that perfect quote to completely summarize your thesis in a research paper? Quoteland can help with that and any other situation where a quote is needed. Featuring categorized and searchable quotes from a ton of sources, a plethora of famous and infamous quotes are at your finger tips. Just imagine, quotes like “Sex is nobody’s business but the three people involved” are out there.

And I guess Quoteland used to give out an award?

an award for well-designed, on-topic reference sites.
