The Road Less Traveled

To some the ascent isn’t worth
the effort and cost,
bruised knuckles and skinned knees
the strain on the heart and mind.
But for the few willing to dare,
they are the ones who gain,
they feel their heart beat
with all the passion and exhilaration
that life has to offer.
To reach the summit
and breathe the air that few have tasted,
see a view that others only dream of,
experience something beyond the ken
of the cattle in the streets.
Understanding how much more
there is to life.
Rarely are we granted the opportunity.
Rarer still does someone accept the challenge,
forsaking the safe monotony of highway life,
for the road less traveled.

D.S.Knight

Be strong, be courageous the sun has risen again and we can see. Today the earth has not claimed us, so let us live for who knows about tomorrow……

As EE observed the newest theme from much of the poems on the forum are quite dealing with almost the same subject: resilience, patience, hardships, breaking through...and here is another one. Very different road from Frost's.

Love it as usual, dsk.

I'm reminded of Luke 12:48 when I read this, DS.

"From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more."

It's a hard road and it's not like there is just the initial challenge is there!! Every day the road throws up a new and more complex challenge to build upon the last. You have to be like a journeyman and live for the day rather than live for some elusive 'retirement package' that we are all speeding towards down on the crowded highway. Smile

Being called on this road is a blessing and a curse! Smile

DSK,

You did well with this. It reminds me of something I wrote many ages past (circa 2004) but yours is stated in a much more desirable, and even perhaps skillful, way I think.

Your last four lines were my favorite and summed the poem up to satisfaction. Awesome!

A mountaineer was asked why he climbed Everest. BECAUSE IT WAS THERE was his answer.

You joined up the dots DSK and painted the picture clearly.

Well framed.

An ambitious road to be sure & not everyone takes the chances & challenges in life. I think at some point it becomes "if not now, when???" In the past 2 years I have plunged forward on a new path, & still have much of the rockier part of the road to travel--but I have begun the journey! And it all started with that one question "If not now, when??" Another great one, DSK! ~~lb~~

Needless to say, the title of your poem drew me in. Hear hear! - to all the sentiments in it. I especially loved the imagery of the lines "..beyond the ken/of the cattle in the streets". Great stuff DSK! Smile
