I came across a few choice anecdotes / stories about how certain common known/spoken English phrases began, so I thought we could post a topic where we could collate a collection of such origins. Smile One evryday!

In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes.

When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase......... 'Goodnight, sleep tight.'

~*Blowing out someone else's candle doesn't make your's burn any brighter.*~
We can't all be stars, but we can all twinkle.
We may not have it all together, but together we have it all.

It's where we get the phrase 'mind your P's and Q's
