Hello ,
I have a question for you all: Do any of you know the real identity of Jack the Ripper?

I've read a part of Judith Walkowitz's book named " City of Dreadful Delight: Narratives of Sexual Danger in Late Victorian London" and I have come to the realization that life as a prostitute in the late Victorian period was VERY dangerous.
I wonder if any of you have read this piece ... if not I shall type it out and let you all read the brutality.

Jack the Ripper mutliated womens bodies, leaving them in alleys to die. Reading the excerpt, I was shocked at the passive attitude by the police officials. They hadn't even done a FULL investigation!

What do you people think of this piece? If any have read it..that is.
And, do you, my fellow literary critics, beleive that Jack the Ripper was never found or that he was, but, none wanted to identify him.
After all, this character was most likely from the upper class of London and was doing the citizens of Whitechapel a favour...

*shivers*

Lastly, have any read books which tell tales of brutality in the Victorian era? If so, what are they about and give a little itty bitty excerpt from it * if possible *.

As I recall, no one actually found out who he was. Though there are lots of thoughts as to who he was. I watched a couple of shows and read a couple of books on him... not to mention that Boston Strangler and other serial killers. I can't imagine those authors going to the jails and interviewing the subjects, it gives me the shivers thinking about it.

Did you see that movie with Johnny Depp in it... I forget the name. Something to the effect of "From hell...". It was based on the Jack Ripper Story.

A political + sinister religious drama. With one of the underground cults involved. That could be a clue.

yay i finally can answere you question sinester, jack the ripper happened to be a man named Walter Richard Sickert. he was an artist. You should read, Portrait of a killer by Patricia Cornwell, she proves this to be fact but it is very interesting as it delves into the life of this sensational killer.

im obssesed with jack. I can't learn enough about him.
he certainly wasn't upper class, he didn't really have a whole lot of money but he was wealthier than the prostitutes he killed.
Cornwell also speculates that he killed others, not just prostitutes but a boy and a young woman. read the book it really is interesting.

No one can prove who Jack the Ripper was.

The investigation was shoddy from the beginning add to the attitude of the age. Very few members of the upper crust had any concern for the prostitutes, or anyone below them for that matter. Most were happy to pretend it never happened. The Ripper could have been anyone from an artist to politician. The identity can only be speculated on, but never proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

Very little evidence exists from the time. Even if DNA evidence did still existed, it would possibly be decayed. Furthermore, if that DNA sample was preserved perfectly, how many people could/would you really test? At that, DNA combinations from the time would be greatly diluted from the time.

Ananya, just like the "Mothman Prophecies," "From Hell" was based on actual events. Based is the key word. Past that, most events in both stories are relatively fictional. Besides, Hollywood has the tendency to distort things. "From Hell," as fascinating as it is, offers no true clue.
