I didn't have any luck, the "doormat" version is not noteworthy enough to track down any point of origin (that I could find, and I didn't spent too much time on it).
So, I tried a Google search of "raise up" "a stepping stone" instead.

Are you thinking of the oft-repeated Ann Landers adage: "If you act like a doormat, don’t be surprised when people wipe their feet on you."

This quote reminds me of the greatest quote of the 20th century in my opinion by Eleanor Roosevelt.

"No one can make you feel inferior with yourconsent." (that would include ourselves)

To me this is the full meaning of love your neighbor as yourself.
