I contacted Mr. Purkey asking him (here is the beginning of my message to him): Are you the author of a quote that goes something like: "Dance like no one is watching, Work like you don't need the money..."
and this is his reply:

I looked up the Ann Wells 1985 article in the L.A. Times. Although the article is about the same general idea, nothing like the quotation is expressed there.

The full quote is "Dance like nobody's watching. Love like you've never been hurt. Sing like nobody's listening. Live like it's heaven on earth." and it is a Mark Twain quote
I have never seen this attributed to Mark Twain. If you have a specific reference to one of his works, please post it. Chances are it has been misattributed to him on the Net.

This quote is from the movie "Terms of endearment" and was spoken by Shirley Mclaine's character Aurora Greenway. If you google the name you can find other Aurora quotes. The exact wording is: "Work like you don't need the money, love like your heart has never been broken and dance like no one is watching".
this is so funny, i was just asking everyone about this about a month ago. you have filled in my blanks so let me help you fill in yours. i have seen a few versions of this but here goes my favorite so far.
