Give me whiskey for my men and beer for my horses.

I have heard this line used in a country music song. Who sings this song and is the line original to the song or is it preceeded by an actual quote or saying?

Toby Keith explains it here. It appears to be an old western saying:

Well I thank ye there Zen Ham. It is really a clever saying. I just got back from an examination from my orthopedic surgeon. When it was my time to go back to the examination room the nurse asked me; “How are you doing?”

I said, “Whiskey if you please and beer for my horse.”

She thought that was right funny seeing how I was dressed like I had just walked out of western movie. The Doc says that I am probably going to need an arthroscopy on my left shoulder. He ordered X-Rays and then eyeballed them before telling me this. He also said that I had heterotrophic bone growing on my left hip which explains the slight limp that I have developed.

I said, “Whiskey for my Doctor and beer for his nurses.”

Excellent sense of humor there, PD. Thanks for the chuckle.
quote:
A drunk was in front of a judge.
The judge says "You've been brought here for drinking whisky."
The drunk says "Okay, let's get started."

Reminds me of the scene in the 25th hour when Edward Norton goes, "Champaign for my real friends, real pain for my sham friends." LOVE that movie.

Well I got a new fix on this line. It was used in the movie, Bite the Bullet. That movie came out in 1975 long before Toby Keith used it in a song. In the movie there is a character played by Jan Michael Vincent. In one scene he takes his horse into the saloon and says. "I'll have whiskey and give me beer for my horse." The barkeep brought a pitcher of beer and set it on the bar and the horse started drinking it.
